Plan before you buy
Start with how you will actually use the garden building. For tools, bicycles and seasonal equipment, a practical layout, wide access and dry storage can matter more than extra windows. If you expect to work there regularly, daylight, ventilation, electrical provision and the required comfort level matter too. A standard uninsulated shed is not automatically a comfortable or habitable workspace. For every product, check the material, wall thickness, construction and stated specification.
Choose the right size
Measure the available area and leave room around the building for installation, maintenance and access. Do not compare external dimensions alone: roof overhang can extend beyond the footprint, while internal space is reduced by the wall construction. Sketch your largest items and allow clear circulation. For bikes, mowers or wide equipment, the clear door opening is critical; a nominal door measurement does not always describe the usable opening. Also check that the route from the street to the garden is wide enough for delivered packs and any assembly team.
Base and preparation
A garden building needs a level, load-bearing and well-drained base. The suitable foundation depends on the model, ground conditions, weight, local conditions and the manufacturer’s instructions. Follow the product instructions and seek professional advice where appropriate; there is no one base solution for every garden. Provide a route for rainwater to drain away and avoid prolonged contact between timber and standing water. Before ordering, check the current rules from your local authority on location, dimensions and intended use.
Compare the complete configuration
Always read what is included with the exact product reference. A floor, roof covering, fixings, paint or primer may be included, optional or excluded. This can vary between versions even where product photographs look similar. Compare the total price of your chosen configuration, including relevant options, delivery and any assembly, rather than an advertised starting price.
Timber, panels and care
Untreated timber generally needs suitable protection in line with the product guidance. Factory-primed wood-based panels usually still require a final finish. Check the recommended system and maintenance interval for the specific product. Keep ventilation openings clear, limit persistent internal moisture, and inspect the roof, fixings, doors and finish regularly. Timely care helps keep the building dry and useful.
Order with fewer surprises
- Check the exact product reference, material, thickness, internal and external measurements and specifications.
- Confirm current product lead times and what delivery to your address requires.
- Check vehicle access, space for packs and access for an assembly team.
- Read the assembly and care instructions before ordering.
These checks help you select a garden building that suits your garden, storage needs and intended use.
